Building permit
A building permit is written approval from the local government to start construction after it reviews your plans against the code.
Florida law makes it unlawful to build, alter, repair or demolish a building without first getting a permit from the enforcing agency. The agency checks your plans against the Florida Building Code. It can revoke a permit if the work does not conform.
The City of Tampa lists the stages of a residential new construction permit: application, fees, plan review and inspections. In a flood area, you also hand in an elevation certificate. Our guide to building on your lot walks through the order of steps.
