Wind-borne debris region

A wind-borne debris region is an area defined in the Florida Building Code where exterior openings must be impact resistant or covered with approved shutters.

A wind-borne debris region is a mapped area where flying debris is a design concern in a hurricane. Inside it, glass doors and windows must be protected, either with impact windows or approved shutters. The region comes from the ASCE 7 wind standard that the Florida Building Code adopts.

The boundary changed in recent standard updates. Do not rely on an old number. Ask the City of Tampa for the rule that applies to your address and permit date. See hurricane-resistant construction in Tampa.
