Local historic district

A local historic district is an area where a city board reviews exterior changes and new buildings to protect the historic character.

A local historic district is set by the city, not the federal government. Inside it, a review board looks at exterior changes. A lot's address tells you if it falls inside a district.

The City of Tampa says Historic Preservation maintains the integrity of its local historic districts and that development in them is reviewed by architectural boards. Work there needs a certificate of appropriateness as well as a building permit. Ask early if the lot is in a district, especially before a tear-down. See building on your lot in Tampa for the order of checks.
